More advice and detail regarding evaluations

Use shots of your completed magazine to illustrate your points, see the one on the post from the link to this page that I sent you for an example and also use some live links/hyperlinks etc to push up your grade, put some pictures of your music genre followers etc on your evaluation to match product to audience especially if you make reference to fashion/colours etc - make sure they match what you have said- and existing magazines on there and compare it to your own - why would the institution of your choice publish and distribute it - would they also make and distribute the music -if so is this an example of technological convergence in that they are marketing their own product and would use other products they also market to sell the music and the magazine -if it is Sony they might use their phones to advertise new tracks and the magazine and the magazine may advertise the phones?

Also finish recording/documenting/responding to more audience feedback on your completed magazine and include that in your analysis to show that you have sought critical feedback from your target group.

Example evaluation - High grade B

Music King- Low level 3 - 36 marks

Music King – Low Level 3 (36)
This piece shows a low level of proficiency in the creative use of technical skills. Images are well framed and manipulated but most of them are mid-shot and they all look very similar apart from the image of the female, the appropriateness of which is questionable. Mise-en-scène effective for the most part. Inaccuracies of language and register throughout product. Illustration and text most successfully integrated on the DPS. Some understanding of conventions evident in the cover page and the DPS but the contents page is weaker. Some attempt to use a house style palette and font throughout product. Fonts over-large on cover and contents pages. ICT has been used appropriately.

Muse- level 3-41 marks out of 60

Muse – Mid Level 3 (41)
A solid level of proficiency shown in the creative use of technical skills. Images are mostly well-framed and there is some variety of shot distance. Most of the images are appropriate although the image on the contents page is noticeably the weakest in terms of appropriateness and mise-en-scène (too dark). Some of the manipulation is a little clumsy, e.g. the guitar in the cover star’s eye. Some inaccuracies in language and register across the product. Integration of text and image shows some skill but some of the text in the DPS can’t be read against the background. DPS most successful in terms of using conventions (although over-texty and columns uneven) and some attempt to use a house style palette across product. Some attempt to use font but it is inconsistent and doesn’t work on the contents page. ICT used appropriately.

Level 3/4 47 out of a possible 60

PM – Level 3/4 border (47/48)
The piece shows a high level of proficiency/low level of excellence in the creative use of technical skills. Images are well-framed for the most part. There is a variety of images but the majority are mid-shots. Material is appropriate to task and mise-en-scène has been considered although Polaroid/black and white effects are questionable in their success. Images well manipulated for the DPS. Cover image has obviously been reversed. A few inaccuracies in language although register seems appropriate. Integration of text/image and understanding of conventions successful for cover and contents pages, less so for the DPS (lack of grid structure). Fonts used well but not consistently throughout product. Strong use of ICT.

Exemplar magazines and marks

The Beat – High Level 4 (57)
This piece shows a high level of excellence in the creative use of technical skills overall. Shots are varied, well framed and appropriate throughout the product. Mise-en-scène has been carefully considered across the images and images have been manipulated with a high level of finish where appropriate (e.g. the contents page). Use of language and register is considered and accurate. Images and text are well integrated throughout the piece although some of the graphic elements are less successful. Piece demonstrates a high level of understanding of conventions across the product: consistent and effective application of a house style although the contents page and the DPS are a little spacey at times. Fonts are generally used well, although there are minor discrepancies in the font used for the band’s name and the title of the magazine on the contents page and DPS. Excellent and appropriate use of ICT

Examples of evaluations

Evaluation Instructions

In what ways does your music magazine use, develop or challenge the forms and conventions of real music magazines?
As you explain your construction and your screen shots comment on how like the real product your magazine is: i.e.-I decided that a top strip was important to show my target audience – this is similar to the edition of…..

How does your music magazine represent particular social groups?
Revisit your audience demographic – most of you went into detail on moodle about this – reuse the material and add in more about your audience profile and how you are representing young people and how your magazine feeds into that representation

Who would your target audience be and why?
Explain this in close detail, make sure you give examples from your magazine that show how your readers are targeted and attracted- compare to a similar product and use audience feedback - mention the music tribe you are aiming your magazine at

What kind of Media institution might distribute your music magazine and why?
Refer back to the institution research and explain why one of the companies you researched would take your magazine as a product to distribute and produce – what niche audience would they attract and how would the technologies converge ie: music sales, mobile adverts, TV and DVD’s

How did you attract and address your audience?
Analyse your use of colour, image, font, your mode of address and use of language on your cover and article – choice of main article and tone and content, text and colour for effect- refer to all the codes and conventions you researched and say how you used them to attract your audience – make direct comparisons with an existing magazine

What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this music magazine? (Lighting, photography, photoshop, indesign)

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Be reflective and evaluative, be honest and point out that your understanding of codes and conventions and housestyle, mise en scene etc was not as good and full as it should have been. DISCUSS music tribes and target audience and how they have informed your construction and use of language, colour etc. Discuss institution adn how you now understand about the synergy between magazine production and publication and how magazines advertise the music and artists that the institutions are supporting.

DO NOT moan about the software - talk about how the different technologies provide various techniques and resources to help complete the whole magazine
Looking back at your preliminary task, (school magazine) what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Remember to be reflective and analytical in your responses and compare everything to the real magazines you researched in the genre you have created.

Also refer constantly to audience feedback –i.e.: I changed this to blue because my audience feedback indicated that the house style was inconsistent when I used a yellow border and….

Advice:

Analysis is why things are as they are.
Advice:
· Don’t spend ages saying ‘I decided to research this…’ and ‘When I had done this I changed it to…’. Get straight to the point, for example ‘After researching women’s magazines I found…’ and ‘The next change made was…because…’
· Choose the key points and explain them in detail rather than trying to cover everything
· Refer to theories and ideas you have learnt in both years of the course as much as you can, think how you can use a higher level of language at all time e.g. ‘narrative structure’ as opposed to ‘storyline’
· Wherever possible try to think beyond decisions of liking or not liking. If you like something or don’t like something there is a reason why: try to uncover what this is e.g. you prefer the purple writing on the pink background rather than black. At first thought you might prefer purple but, purple and pink are actually complementary colours and this will account for why you prefer it. It is not wrong to prefer one thing to another, you must get to the ‘why’ you preferred it and write about that reason.
Avoid simply describing, always analyse and evaluate.

Hello Everyone

From this point on all of your research and planning will be entered into and conducted within the blog you create. You can create links to audio, film, powerpoint files, jpegs etc so that everything can be conducted and constructed on line.
